It's a shame that metal SLS printing isn't more affordable. All of those plastic pieces would be so much better that way since you could make them less solid yet still sturdy. Makes me wonder if anyone is working on building one from scratch in a home workshop.

I’ll say it again: seeing my inspiration for robotics come alive once again is just such an honor to see happen! And with modern technology, all the things J5 could do in his movies (or at least his first movie) being possible to put in one robot, is just so cool!!! J5, you will be alive again…5+ times over, because I’m following other J5 builds as well! Speaking of which, I’m considering making a more stylized chibi version of J5 that is about as tall as the Meccano MAX robot, but a little taller, but also a bit wider. I’m thinking of making a CAD model that takes the existing design, and kinda shrinks and simplifies it to like an even cuter design, but still relatively slender so it doesn’t just look like J5 squished into WALL-E dimensions (nothing against WALL-E, I love that robot just as much as 5, but I don’t want to just mix the two together either.) and make it printable and buildable with the ability to work with inexpensive electronics like model R/C motors, and even some LEGO and Meccano parts if needed!

I was thinking that one way to do the manual tool change would be to keep one pocket empty (p18 for example). Then tell it to go to p18 and pause. Then tell it to use T75 H75 D75 and manually put the tool in the spindle. Then if you want a safety check, command it to check for a broken tool to verify you put in the correct tool. Once the broken tool check passes, then it proceeds to automatic operations. I’m not familiar with writing macros, but you could do a lot of this with a pass through operation that could be saved as a template.

How about everybody in the J5 community getting together and create an online store with standardized J5 parts available for those persons who have or want to build a Johnny 5. The parts could be manufactured by the members who have manufactured them and have a list of the standardized parts that are still available commercially.

The problem with machining compared to the other trades is the income-to-hassle ratio is terrible. In most markets a machinist earns at least $10/hr less than a welder, plumber, or electrician. Not to mention the other trades are much less susceptible to overseas-outsourcing.

Thanks for the video. I had a strange experience about post processing. Fusion 360 adds a Z0 command line along with the 28 and 90 before spindle motor starts and the bit dives like hell into the part. I fixed the issue by deleting that line then spindle motor stands still where I zeroed then starts spindle motor and starts carving as it should be.

Lack of a master library is definitely a source of irritation. Even as a single user with a single machine, I have 2 computers I program from and there is no function to sync libraries between the 2 computers - say if I make changes or add a tool from my office PC, then go down to the garage. Those changes aren't there unless you create a "snapshot" of the library, manually export it from PC1, then import it onto PC2. Or if you're lucky, a recent file you worked from has all of the latest tools in it that you can draw from. I can imagine how this becomes an even bigger headache when you have multiple PC's, multiple users, multiple machines, etc. everything else is cloud based in fusion, why can't the tool library live and update itself with changes like any other file? Is there a functional reason it was set up that way?

I have a hallmark sensor activated Spider, that doesn't need all that, which I got in USA in 2014, when it stops working I'm going to pull it apart to see how it works off 2 AA batteries. It does have about 5 jokes that it speaks as it drops. Everything is inside the body of the spider though. This looks great though.

You are wrong and giving out stupid advice. A few decades ago, before LED lighting was a thing, I worked for a vending company in Maryland. My boss CJ invented these LED Strips to put in the vending machines in place of the long bulbs. This was to make the machines use less electricity, and to spend less time going to machines all over Maryland, Virginia, and DC, changing out light bulbs all the time. We made thousands of them in the basement of our warehouse, many of which I made by hand, one component at a time, soldered into place. I tried for a long time to convince CJ to get a Patent but he was always cheap and decided not to do it. Also I tried to convince him that if we can make this LED Strips to replace the long Fluorescent bulbs, then why not reconfigure that design into the traditional lightbulb shape to sell to the average homeowner. He said it would never work, and here we are decades later and he's now kicking himself for not listening to me. Also, another company liked our light strips so much, they decided to get a patent on them and manufacturer and sell them. They also sued my boss to force him to stop making them. They Won.

No offense and no disrespect, but it's seriously disgusting that the world works the way it does. There's always someone taking a piece of something that someone else worked for. Why would a patent be $50k... like seriously!? Just people getting rich off of other people.
